The Integrated Learning approach comprises a number of learning methods, each designed to support the other. Each method is viewed as part of the whole. They are mutually supportive, equally relevant and beneficial to the individual studying the programme. We encourage students not to focus on one part of the approach whilst failing to utilise another. In this way the learning experience is maximised. This unique, tried and tested learning methodology has consistently achieved great results.
Through a unique combination of comprehensive course materials, supported by first class website facilities (providing both information and support) and regular face-to-face workshops facilitated by experienced industry practitioners, the integrated learning approach offers an excellent opportunity for individuals wishing to participate in the ICA’s high level study programmes.
The Integrated Learning Approach Explained
The programmes are a combination of distance learning and face-to-face study, supported by detailed learning materials and a comprehensive website, leading through to an assessment and examination prior to the attainment of qualification.
ICA Course Materials
The course study materials comprise:
- Core modules (incorporating a series of topic related modules)
- Specialist Modules (where appropriate)
- Appendices
- Additional Readings
- Assignment Questions (available online)
- Study Handbook (setting out the approach to study)
The Study handbook sets out the approach to study for the particular ICA programme. It gives important information and direction in the following areas:
- Getting started and planning study
- Assignment writing guidance
- Examination techniques
- Guidance on receiving additional study support
The ICA and ICT websites are an essential ingredient in the study programme framework. Each provides a wealth of information for individuals to utilise not only during their period of study but post award of qualification. Essentially the
International Compliance Association website is the library and information site. Its content includes:
- Up to the minute news feed
- Resource Centre
- Knowledge Bank
- Useful Links
- Discussion Forum
- Email alert service
- Online Members Directory
International Compliance Training website provides on-line access to individuals’ study programmes. Here is the study guide to help in planning and working out time needed to complete the programme and access to the course itself. You will also find:
- Assignments
- Syllabus
- Self Assessment Questions
- Specimen Exam Papers
- Student Support
Face-to Face Tuition
Dates, location and timings are provided at the start of studies. Topics covered within the course materials are brought to life in a practical way that is clear and relevant. Case studies are explored and discussions held and group exercise given. Tutors provide examples throughout and explain relevant terms to ensure understanding. Workshops also provide a good opportunity to liaise with peers and discuss approaches to study.
The ICT (Middle East) workshop sessions are designed to address the following:
- To expand and review substantial knowledge
- To enhance practical awareness
- To create the ability to deal with the more difficult areas of the syllabus
- To analyse problems in a practical context
- To develop the examination techniques necessary to succeed
- To allow individuals to interact with peers studying the same programme
For each workshop there is workshop pack containing a copy of the slides used by the tutor during the session, together with additional supporting handouts. These can be used to aid note taking and revision of the topics covered during the workshop session.
Additional Support
Course Tutors
We believe in supporting individuals before, during and after their studies, which ever programme they choose. For those students who enroll onto an ICA qualification, a dedicated tutor is allocated with whom you can liaise. You are also given access to the Discussion Forum where generic issues maybe raised. Individuals may contact a tutor at any time.
Study Groups
Study Groups are informal, ideally comprising 4-5 individuals who communicate regularly face to face or by email. Such a system of support can be invaluable throughout the period of study. They provide a good forum for sharing experiences and learning from each other and are a great way to network.
Mentor Scheme
A mentor is ideally, though not necessarily, a person who is experienced in the area of work that the individual is studying, e.g. a line manager, colleague or friend. The mentor's function is to give encouragement, motivation, help and guidance throughout the duration of the course.
Assessment
If you are studying an ICA programme, you will be asked to undertake assessments throughout the duration of your studies. During the Diploma courses, individuals are assessed through submission of two assignments and completion of an open-book examination at the end of the course.
The different methods of assessment are designed to offer individuals the broadest possible opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the topics studies.
Assignment questions are structured and phrased in a particular way in order to stimulate enquiry, thought and research on the part of the individual. The questions are linked to the topics they have studied. Assignment skills to be assessed relate specifically to the ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding, combined with the ability to apply these to the question set. In addition, they test the individual's ability to research and explore issues in more detail in a way that is relevant to the particular topic.
As a contrast, examination questions - drawn from across the entire syllabus - require demonstration of different yet complimentary skills. The test the ability to produce an accurate response, sufficiently detailed to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relevant topics within a time pressured environment.
